A humidifier's room-size figure is unregulated: nobody certifies it, and makers are free to print whatever number they like. Run each published claim against the standard winter load calculation and the spread is enormous — some units claim four times the room their output supports, and a handful claim less. These are the honest ones.

White dust on a dresser is the most common reason a humidifier ends up in a cupboard. It is not a fault — it is the dissolved minerals in tap water, atomised into the room along with the water. Only ultrasonic and hybrid units can do it, and only when nothing filters those minerals out first. Everything on this page is either a type that physically cannot make dust, or an ultrasonic that ships a demineralisation cartridge.

Three things decide whether a humidifier works in a nursery, and room size is not among them: how loud it is at the setting you will actually run, whether it puts mineral dust into the air a baby is breathing, and how likely you are to keep it clean at the interval it needs. A unit that fails the third quietly becomes the problem it was bought to solve.

The sticker price is the smaller number for most of these. A wick habit runs $20 to $60 a year, a demineralisation cartridge schedule can beat that, and a heated unit left on all winter costs more in electricity than several of the cheap ultrasonics cost to buy. This adds both together.

Everything else on a humidifier box is secondary to gallons per day. Under $150 the spread is wide — from units that move barely a third of a gallon to console evaporatives shifting four, which is a twelvefold difference in capability at the same money.

This is where marketing claims and physics part company most violently. An 800-square-foot open plan wants roughly 3.2 gallons a day to hold 40% through a cold snap, and the number of portable humidifiers that genuinely deliver that is small — far smaller than the number that print 750 or 1,000 on the carton.

Plumbed into the ductwork, a whole-house humidifier removes the failure mode that ends most portable ones: nobody has to fill it. The trade is an installation, a dependence on the heating system, and in the case of steam a dedicated 240-volt circuit. Capacity here starts where the largest portable console stops.

Almost every box in this category carries a runtime from one setting and a room size from another. Reconcile them — divide the tank by the output the claimed room actually requires — and the honest refill interval appears. For some units it is most of a week. For others it is an afternoon.
