There is no test lab and no staff

Nobody here has run a humidifier on a scale. There is no editor, no panel of experts, and nothing on this site claims a hands-on trial, because that would not be true. What there is: manufacturer documentation read carefully, a physics calculation applied consistently to all 50 units, and owner discussion summarised without being invented.

Where the specifications come from

Manufacturer product pages, manuals and spec sheets first, then dated retailer listings where a maker publishes nothing. Every unit records the URLs it was built from. Where two sources disagree, the maker’s own documentation wins and the discrepancy goes in the write-up — Crane’s Drop, for instance, is listed at 500 sq ft by retailers and 250 sq ft in one of Crane’s own manuals, and that is worth saying rather than quietly picking one.

Room sizes are computed, not copied

This is the part that makes the site worth reading. A maker’s square-footage claim is not a measured figure and nobody certifies it — AHAM runs certification directories for air cleaners, dehumidifiers and room air conditioners, and none for humidifiers. So we recompute it from published output using the standard winter moisture-load calculation, at stated reference conditions, and show both numbers together.

The constant is 0.0040591 gallons per day per square foot, and the full derivation and its assumptions are on the spec-sheet page. Across the catalog, 26 of the 45 units that publish both numbers overstate their room by more than 15%, with a median overstatement of 1.2×. Where a maker publishes no output rate at all — 2 of them — we say so and leave the field blank rather than estimating one.

Where sentiment comes from

Owner discussions and long-form owner reviews, read and summarised. 34 of 50 units currently have an owner summary; the rest show an honest note saying none has been collected. 9 units are marked as written from specifications rather than owner reports, and their pages say so in plain text. We do not write “owners report” about a product whose owners we have not read, and we do not name the forums — the people writing there did not sign up to be a marketing source.

Ratings are cited or hidden

A star rating only appears when it comes from a named, non-Amazon source — a brand’s own store, Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s — and the source is printed next to it. An uncited number is not shown at all, and no rating is ever put into structured data as though this site had collected the reviews. As it stands 0 of 50 units here carry a star rating, because retailer review pages refuse automated access and we would rather show nothing than something unattributable.

How the lists are ordered

Every one of the 8 guides prints the rule it sorts on at the top of the page. The 40 head-to-head pages highlight a cell only where a number has an unambiguous better direction — more output, less noise, lower cost — and leave tank size, mist type and dimensions neutral, because those have no universal winner. Nothing is ranked by a composite score we invented.

Nothing here is paid placement, and nothing is sold

This site carries no retailer links of any kind: no buy buttons, no affiliate tags, no sponsored entries, no advertising. Nobody pays to appear and nobody pays to rank higher. Prices are approximate snapshots from the last catalog update, shown with a ~ to make that obvious, and no link on this site will take you to a checkout.

What we will not print

• Engagement counts, discussion totals, or any number describing something we did not count.
• Health claims restated as fact. Where a maker claims UV sterilisation or a germ-kill percentage, we attribute it to the maker.
• An owner summary for a product whose owners we have not read.
• A room size we cannot derive from a published output figure.
• Amazon star ratings or review counts, anywhere.

Corrections and currency

The catalog was last refreshed on September 24, 2026. Specs drift: models get discontinued, prices move seasonally, and makers quietly revise their own figures. If something here is wrong, write to chelsea@hagadornwebdev.com and say what and where.
